On his Edmonton Music Prize-nominated album, New Radar (2012), Calvin Love sounded like he was trapped in a self-made cocoon lined with dandelion fuzz and disco balls. The lo-fi synth-rocker came off as shy, sunken and deliberately cut off from the rest of the world as he nursed a broken soul and/or shattered confidence. For Super Future, his first album on Toronto's Arts & Crafts, Love isn't exactly busting out like a flamboyant butterfly, but you can feel him testing out his first swaggering steps - buoyed by bouncier guitar riffs and lighter synths than on his previous effort. "A sight for sore eyes / I'll fight for your love," his reedy voice quivers on Girl, a dance-y declaration with tinny drum beats, pulses of synth lasers and whispered vocals reminiscent of Air's Sexy Boy. Love's self-esteem is still a work in progress, and sometimes betrays him, as on Automaton. " I wish you were my robot / So I wouldn't feel left out," he laments. Love isn't low for long, mercifully. By the next track, I Wanna Know, he's flirting with a girl, grooving to a bluesy guitar, and whooping like a nervous lover. Two tracks later, on Luna, he's growling like a tiger looking for his prey. At this rate, Love is going to be a bonafide Lothario by his next album. Watch out.
