Pianist Martha Argerich will visit Hiroshima at the invitation of Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and its music director Kazuyoshi Akiyama.
Mrs. Argerich will play Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.1 in C major op.15 .
in the concert titled “ An Evening of Peace Concert 2015”, following the schedule below :
August 5   18:45 at Bunka Gakuen HBG Hall, Hiroshima
August 11  19:00 at Suntory Hall , Tokyo
In addition to Mrs. Argerich’s performance, “ An Evening of Peace Concert 2015” will include the performance of Beethoven’s Egmont overture and Paul Hindemith’s Die Harmonie der Welt performed by Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kazuyoshi Akiyama, as well as the reading of poems by victims of A-bomb and holocaust, narrated by Annie Dutoit (actor) and Keiichiro Hirano (novelist).

  I am happy and honored to play with Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama to commemorate the 70th anniversary of A-bomb attack on Hiroshima.
  I have been playing in Japan for several years under the concept of Music Against Crime, which was born from the strong belief that the love that music holds within it will weaken people’s desire to harm others.
  I think the most horrible crimes we witnessed during World War Ⅱ were the A-bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Holocaust in Poland.
  The crime of using nuclear weapons and the crime of using racism and ethnocentrism for solving disputes should never happen.
  I believe Hiroshima will play an even more important role to put an end to such crimes in the future.

Sophisticated Lady jazz quartet pays homage to the Great Tradition of American jazz but most of their repertoire is written by members of the quartet. Unlike the majority of contemporary jazz recordings, which are carefully and surgically perfected in postproduction, this album remains raw and fresh. These tracks are complete takes, “live to tape,” without editing.

Yarlung recorded this album directly to two tracks of RMGI 468 analog tape running at 15 ips, with no mixer.  We used the Hapi converter and Pyramix software from Merging Technologies in Switzerland to make these transfers to DSD.  Our sincere thanks to George Klissarov and exaSound for making these releases possible.

More jazz records should be like Sophisticated Lady Quartet, relaxed yet focused, tradition-based yet modern, elegant yet conveying a sure sense of swing. The recording is so pure that you almost feel as if you’re eavesdropping on four musicians who seem completely in their element while performing, in a one-take environment, a set that’s evenly split between previously rehearsed arrangements and performances where they had one chance to turn a composition into a memorable piece of music. In Making the World Safe, historian Julia Irwin offers an insightful account of the American Red Cross, from its founding in 1881 by Clara Barton to its rise as the government's official voluntary aid agency. Equally important, Irwin shows that the story of the Red Cross is simultaneously a story of how Americans first began to see foreign aid as a key element in their relations with the world.

As the American Century dawned, more and more Americans saw the need to engage in world affairs and to make the world a safer place-not by military action but through humanitarian aid. It was a time perfectly suited for the rise of the ARC. Irwin shows how the early and vigorous support of William H. Taft-who was honorary president of the ARC even as he served as President of the United States-gave the Red Cross invaluable connections with the federal government, eventually making it the official agency to administer aid both at home and abroad. Irwin describes how, during World War I, the ARC grew at an explosive rate and extended its relief work for European civilians into a humanitarian undertaking of massive proportions, an effort that was also a major propaganda coup. Irwin also shows how in the interwar years, the ARC's mission meshed well with presidential diplomatic styles, and how, with the coming of World War II, the ARC once again grew exponentially, becoming a powerful part of government efforts to bring aid to war-torn parts of the world.

The belief in the value of foreign aid remains a central pillar of U.S. foreign relations. Making the World Safe reveals how this belief took hold in America and the role of the American Red Cross in promoting it.
